More than 20,000 people are registered with one UK "dogging" newsgroup. Carping is derived from the activity of dogging. The NHS Health Promotion team covering the Medway area in Kent noticed that the number of cases of hepatitis rose towards the end of 2002, and some patients said they had probably contracted the illness as a result of dogging.
